Capital Tax Recovery Notice: (also on news & announcements)

Over the past few years the number of people driving without a current registration, driving with out-of-state plates, or who have an incorrect registration has increased dramatically.  The Tax Assessor’s office has sent letters to all the new home owners, to all the apartment complexes, and to various other entities every year to remind them to make the change, but we still have many people who will not comply with the law and thus, the town loses revenue. Many of the surrounding towns have started using companies that are able use technology to identify out-of-state vehicles and personal property.

Similarly, the Town of Brookfield has contracted Capital Tax Recovery (CTR) to identify the out of state or unregistered/incorrectly registered vehicles in town, as well as other personal property such as golf carts, ATVs, snowmobiles, various trailers, etc. that should be registered with the Assessor’s office. CTR will conduct extensive research and work with the Assessor’s office to identify the potential vehicles or personal property that have been missing from the tax rolls for the past several years. CTR will send out notifications to the owners of the vehicles that are identified and will provide them an opportunity to resolve their issue. There is no cost to the Town of Brookfield for this service, however, the owner will pay a $50 fee per vehicle discovered to CTR.

We highly recommend that residents who may fall into one of these delinquent categories to get their cars registered as soon as possible or come into the Assessor’s office with a motor vehicle personal property form, which can be found on our website. Also, owners should check their car registrations to make sure they are up to date, that they have the correct address, and the tax town code says 018 for Brookfield. If any of the information is incorrect, then please go online with DMV and fill out a change of address form for an individual registration. For business vehicles, owners will have to fill out a commercial vehicle change of address form and go to DMV in person or mail in the form. We have both forms on our website.

Lastly, for those residents paying taxes to the wrong town, then that town is using the money for their schools and projects, not Brookfield. The assessment year starts October 1st through September 30th. Anyone is able to report a vehicle that is believed to be domiciled in Brookfield without properly registering with the Town using the CTR Website

If you have any questions, please feel free to call the Tax Assessor’s office at 203-775-7302.
