We have been awarded a $1.06 million rant to build Phase III of the Streetscape, planned for Laurel Hill Road and Old Route 7. The total estimated project cost is $1.3            million, so the town has committed to paying the additional @240,000. Consturction is planned for spring of 2021.

December 11, 2017 - Streetscape Project Update #27
Your weekly update (a couple days late),

  1. The wiring has been pulled and the flashing beacon pedestals and traffic control cameras have been installed. Sometime this week all this new equipment will be in operation and the traffic signals at the intersection will be responding to real-time traffic conditions.
  2. With our first snow fall hitting Brookfield last week, a reminder to property and business owners: it is your responsibility to keep your sidewalk clear of ice and snow. Our Town ordinance requires that sidewalks be cleared within 24 hours after the end of a snowfall or other winter weather. Brookfield Police can issue a $100 ticket for violations. All but 3 property owners did a fine job clearing their sidewalk within the 24 hour time period this past snow event.

December 1, 2017 - Streetscape Project Update #26
Your weekly update:

  1. A crew from the Town’s Dept of Public Works wrapped Christmas lights around each of the light poles. They look great.
  2. Unexpected delivery delays of the electrical hardware associated with the flashing beacons resulted in a rescheduling of this equipment next week.
  3. With the installation of the flashing beacons and other traffic signal equipment, this project is on schedule to be complete on Dec 15. After the Town sign-off, there will be a CT DOT inspection and a review/sign off by the Engineer of Record.

November 17, 2017 - Streetscape Project Update #25
Your weekly update:

  1.  All sidewalk lights are now electrified and roadway directional signs erected.
  2. When you have a chance take a look at the newly installed red brick herringbone pattern crosswalk at the Craft Center curve on Whisconier Rd – it is a very nice enhancement.
  3. This Sunday night, weather permitting, the roadway will be striped. This work will include marking of the parking spaces, roadway shoulder, turning lanes (there is a new turning lane on Station Rd), etc. It is our hope that these markings will increase driver awareness -  several times over the past month cars have jumped the curb where driveways once existed.
  4. Please advise customers, employees and visitors to your place of business that the sidewalk must not be used to park cars. This week there were 3 instances of individuals parking their cars on the sidewalk. Not only is this a safety concern for pedestrians but the sidewalk and brick pavers are not designed to withstand the weight from a heavy vehicle. Parking cars on a sidewalk is a traffic violation and Brookfield Police can ticket anyone doing so.
  5. The focus next week will be to install and electrify the flashing beacons.  This will greatly improve the safety of individuals crossing the street. More asphalt and brink paver work is also planned.
  6. Work is planned for Mon – Wed next week and will then resume after the long Thanksgiving weekend on Monday, Nov 27.

November 8, 2017 - Streetscape Project Update #24
Your weekly update:

  1. Roadway paving is complete and all lanes have been reopened. Several new sidewalk lights have been energized and a couple hundred feet of concrete sidewalk has been poured. Roadway lines will be laid out in a few days. THANK YOU Brookfield Police Officers and staff for providing outstanding traffic and pedestrian safety to our residents and travelers.
  2. All eight utility poles have been removed on the west side of Federal Rd. With these poles out of the way there is that much less clutter and the sidewalk sight line is much cleaner.
  3. Work over the next few days will include installing brink pavers, concrete sidewalk and flashing beacons at the crosswalk. We are on target for a substantial completion date of Nov 17.

November 3, 2017 - Streetscape Project Update #23
Your weekly update:

  1. 100% of the granite curbing is now installed and all concrete driveways have been poured throughout all of Phase 1. There was a lot of work done at the curve on Whisconier and Station Roads.  Work next week will focus on installing the remaining 6 light poles and the concrete sidewalk from Subway around the Mobile Gas Station to Brookfield Village’s new building on Station Rd.
  2. All of the roadway milling was done on Thursday and today. Plans are to pave on Monday and Tuesday (weather permitting).
  3. If you haven’t driven through the area in the evening please do so. Fifteen (15) of the light poles have been connected to a temporary power source and now go on at dusk. Our lights are LED and switch on/off from a sensor high up on each pole. The area now illuminated is south of the intersection and east on Whisconier Rd. We hope to have the remaining 19 poles connected next week.

Have a great weekend and enjoy our new downtown.

November 1, 2017 - Streetscape Project IMPORTANT Update #22
This is an important mid-week update that may be of special interest to you. We have received approval for our roadway milling and paving schedule from Chief Purcell and his staff. The plan is as follows.

  1. Starting tomorrow morning at 7:00am Station Rd will be closed to thru traffic between Federal and Laurel Hill Roads for roadway milling. Station Road is expected to be reopened around 9 am.
  2. Starting tomorrow around 9am and for the remainder of the work day and probably Friday morning, Federal  and Whisconier Roads will be restricted to one-way alternating traffic within the boundary limits of the project for roadway milling. As a reminder the boundary limits of this phase of the project are: 786 Federal Rd (Funeral Home) north to 837 Federal Rd; Station Rd from the intersection west to the new Brookfield Village building now under construction; and on Whisconier Rd from the intersection east, over the bridge, past the curve, ending 75 feet past the new pedestrian island.
  3. Starting Monday at 7 am throughout the workday and on possibly Tuesday, roadway paving is scheduled within the entire boundary limits of the project on Federal, Station and Whisconier Roads. This schedule assumes no rain.

Brookfield officers are being scheduled for traffic control and appropriate construction signage will be in place during this period.  No work is scheduled in the evening, overnight or on the weekend.
